The Indian Constitution states that all Indians are equal and have the right to equality. But unfortunately, the reality is not so realistic. Even after 73 years of independence, discrimination still exists within religion, caste and gender. The reservation system in India was introduced to enhance the disadvantaged sections of society. Seeing this, the constitution-makers granted reservations to scheduled castes (SC), scheduled tribes (ST), other backward classes (OBC) and Economically Backward classes in legislatures, government jobs, promotions and educational scholarships. However, it was only valid for ten years, but unfortunately, it is still prevailing even after years of independence.
But if we see the ground reality, reservation is not used by the people who should use them. Despite this, the political parties are using it to win elections and it has just become an election slogan.
The reservation system helps people from socially and economically weaker sections to obtain job opportunities and admissions in educational institutions, operated by the government. This means that students from backward classes gain added benefit in obtaining higher education. Consequently, people from lower castes gain more opportunities which give them a better chance to structure a better future not only for them but for the upcoming generations too. It is also a step to eliminate the economic and social disparities in the nation and move a step ahead in the path of a balanced social system. The reservation system in India has been working in favor of the people who belong to the backward castes. However, it has led to several disputes in the nation, especially in surpassing merit, when deserved candidates are unable to get admissions or jobs that they deserve, as the seat goes to candidates of lower castes in the name of reserved quota.
